Horia, Guest Speaker at Transilvania Film Festival (TIFF)
June 10, 2013
Cluj, Romania
horia-tiff-2013
Horia Colibasanu, the 36-year-old mountaineer who has ascended six 8,000-meter mountains on Earth, without supplementary oxygen, expedition-style, was the guest speaker at TIFF Film Festival (Cluj) at the end of last week.

Horia shared his learning from the tragic Annapurna expedition in 2008, when he lost his friend and teammate, Spaniard Iñaki Ochoa (1967-2008), one of the world's best climbers at that time. Just 100m beneath the summit, Iñaki suffered a brains stroke. Instead of descending, Horia put his own life to risk and remained with Iñaki for 72 hours, to hydrate, feed and warm him up.

Horia called the alarm and the biggest rescue attempt in the history of the Himalayas followed. Some of the best mountaineers in the world took part. Based on that story, Arena Comunicación from Spain, in coproduction with Spanish broadcaster TVE, produced the documentary movie "Pura Vida/The Ridge", winner at San Sebastian International Film Festival.

"Pura Vida/The Ridge", which was screened at the TIFF Film Festival, registered a huge success among viewers, with whom Horia had an interactive Q&A session.

Horia, On the Top of Lhotse Mt.

May 21, 2013
Himalaya, Nepal
horia-lhotse-2013
Horia Colibasanu, born in Romania, reached the top of Mount Lhotse today, the fourth highest mountain in the world (8,516m), situated in the Himalayas of Nepal. Horia’s success on Lhotse marked a new national premiere, the fifth, for his home country.

"The extreme cold squeezed us to the last drop of energy. And so did the nine hours of continuous climb. But we did it!" Those were Horia’s first words on his blog, soon after his successful attempt on Lhotse, without supplementary oxygen and porters.

Horia’s climbing partners in the Slatina-Lhotse expedition were Peter Hámor (Slovakia) and Justin Ionescu (Romania).
Lhotse ("South Peak", in Tibetan) is located at the border between Nepal and Tibet (China) and is connected to the Mount Everest via the South Col.

By the age of 36, Horia Colibasanu has ascended six out of the fourteen 8,000-meter mountains on Earth, without supplementary oxygen, expedition-style. Horia's successful attempts include the dangerous K2, the unpopular Annapurna and the unpredictable Dhaulagiri. These three mountains are included in Top 5 most deadly in the world*.

Given his track-record and international recognition, Horia Colibășanu is considered Romania's most successful mountaineer.

*according to Eberhard Jurgalski, an authority in 8,000-meter peaks chronicles (as of March 2012), quoted by The Economist, in May 2013.
